I finally did it last night - I managed to get two huge combos in one run and so earnt a total of 1.1 million points. So, that's the first five levels cleared.
I then went on to do the 'interesting' tasks on Alcatraz - COMBO, SKATE, hidden tape, and so on - all in three runs. Now I've just got to explore the level to try and find places and routes to get big combos.
